Day in the life of...an intern with two other jobs in the city that never sleeps
So I've been writing about my many experiences and my frustration with the subway, but you still may be wondering exactly what I do and what my days are like. Living in NYC is quite different than living on the west coast, it's a whole different culture. I want to give you a "day in the life of Dani Jean" but that's not easy since every day is something new and never boring. But you're probably thinking, "how the hell do you juggle three jobs?" So let me try to tell you, then tell me, could you do this? Could you do this if it were for something you really wanted?
I hate routine. I love being spontaneous. I love learning constantly. I hate being bored. The great thing about having three jobs is I never know what to expect and I never get bored doing just one thing. But now, I look forward to the day where I'll know my schedule and know what to usually expect. My schedule now is just a tad bit too hectic.
So here we go, starting with a "typical" Monday.
7:30 am: Wake up. I was getting up at 8 am but one of my roommates takes a lifetime in the bathroom, leaving me no time. So I make sure to get up and sneak in before he does. Since our apartment is railroad style and I don't want to wake my roomies up, I take my keys, go out into the main building hallway, and enter through our main door to get to the bathroom and kitchen.
9 am: I'm out the door by 9 to catch the M train into Manhattan that usually comes around 9:15. I put my earbuds in and ride the train half asleep with coffee in my hand. Everyone else is doing the same thing. Good thing I always get a seat because you don't want to see me try to balance, I'm usually falling all over the place, and into people.
10 am: Arrive at my internship in midtown. I usually begin by looking for beauty news by checking a list of websites. There are posts/columns we do weekly so I write many of those while brainstorming other story ideas. I check Twitter and see what people are talking about and get my brain rolling around some fantastic story ideas (common beauty mistakes).
1 pm: While everyone around is ordering delicious smelling food from seamless.com, I pull out my usual sandwich out of my giant tote and devour it in about three bites.
2 pm: Who knows what I'm doing. I could be smelling the latest fragrance my beauty director just got, organizing the beauty closet, steaming clothes (I learned how to steam on Tuesday for a photo shoot, go me!), or writing about how candy-colored hair is the trend right now. I have to be an idea machine--constantly shooting out ideas that pop into my head. I also have to check that we haven't written any similar stories and that other competitive media companies haven't done so either recently. If so, or if the idea is too broad, I try to think of a twist, a way to make the story "new."
6 pm: If I'm not going home, I'm heading to my other job to fold some panties. Or find a missing bra in the millions of boxes. Herald Square opens to family and friends this Monday so no more stocking after this weekend! My dinner usually consists of a protein bar or what ever else I was able to stuff in my giant tote. If I'm not going to VS, I'm probably putting on my pirate shirt and getting people drunk till 4 am.
12 am: If I'm not working at the bar, I usually get home around this time. Once again I'm half asleep on the M train, secretly people watching. So many women do their makeup on the subway and now that I'm in the beauty industry I have thoughts like, "oh god, why is she wearing blue eyeshadow?" "Oh honey, that doesn't work for you." Or today I actually saw someone tweezing their eyebrows. Yes, I see this in the morning and at night.
1 am: I shower at night because it's just not feasible for me to do so in the morning. I'd rather sleep more and go with greasy hair (gross, I know) than wake up any earlier and attempt to get my brain working on which goes first, shampoo or conditioner. (I'm seriously a non-functioning zombie in the a.m.) I also prepare my coffee at night and make my lunch. Serious time saver in the morning. Then I go pass out on my air mattress with the window open and fan on because New Yorkers don't know what conserving energy/heat means and turn every building into a damn toaster oven. (Sorry to those of you who are "green," I try to be but I can't simply sleep while sweating. And we can't control our heat.)
Today was, of course, not a typical day. We had a State of Style Summit in tribeca where speakers from the fashion industry and digital world come and speak at panels, answering questions. We're all about Style To The People and this is another way we bring that. I worked the welcome desk and checked in guests. There were entrepreneurs, magazine editors, fashion designers, and more at this event. I got to hear some of it (and eat free food!) when the check-in table was slow. Then I went to VS and got to learn about the Pink products we'll be launching for the holiday season.
Whew. Now I lay here surfing the web. Need something to make your day better? Go here. I'm easily amused and literally LOL at posts like these. Hopefully they make you smile too!
