No longer a bum with no job!

I can proudly tell you that everything is coming together. I was expecting weeks of searching for an apartment and job with hiccups along the way but alas, things are working in my favor.

My two other roommates looked at apartments on Tuesday when I was at my internship and found one they really like for a decent price in the Glendale neighborhood, close to Queens. Sure, it's not hip Williamsburg or shopping central Soho, but I'll take it! I haven't actually had a chance to see it personally but from the pictures and my roommates descriptions, it's a good size for the price with hardwood floors in a safe neighborhood close to the M train. We have a meeting on Tuesday to sign the lease!

It's ridiculous what it takes to get an apartment in New York though. Many places have brokers who require a large sum of money, landlords are difficult, and they all require a credit check, bank statements, proof of income, tax returns, and even references from past landlords. I obviously am not in a place in my life to provide all of this and get approved, so here comes mom as my guarantor who has to provide all the same stuff. While trying to be as resourceful as possible and be the independent woman I want to be, I will find that I still need my mother for many things. (Thanks mom!)

And here's some more fabulous news. Yesterday morning I went to a job recruitment event through Workforce for Gap, Victoria's Secret, and Century 21, an event I found on craigslist and decided to give it a shot. There were about 20-30 of us (I may have been the only white girl) in a group interview with a guy who does recruitment for these places. After hearing a guy say he'd be a perfect Gap model and another girl talk about how sexy Victoria's Secret is, I got asked to stay after so the recruiter could tell me I had an interview at Victoria's Secret that day at 5 pm. It was in Soho and I ended up arriving 30 minutes early so I walked around and awed at the fashion and the stores I hope to shop in one day. The interview was another group interview, and after I got called back for a final one today. I met with the district manager and he said I have the perfect personality for Pink and hired me on the spot! I'll be doing sales at the remodeled location at 34th St Herald Sq, which will be the biggest store in the world.

So my hectic life is about to start. Working my internship Monday-Wednesday and Pink Thursday-Sunday. I'll be making just enough to hopefully get by so I may have to look for a night job as well, since I would like to afford something more than Chef Boyardee and PBR. A mattress would be nice, too.

  1. Signing my life away to help secure your apartment is the least I could do to help launch your independence. That's what moms are for. I got your back.
