Just put some hot sauce on it
I'm at a point where I'm planning to become an extreme couponer and start a protest proposing tampons be free. One dollar means a lot to me. A quarter on the ground means I get a few extra minutes drying my clothes. I drool at my desk when my coworkers bring back Chipotle for lunch.
But being broke doesn't mean I have to eat bad, or nothing at all. It's about going back to basics, stocking up, and having go-to recipes for easy and cheap meals. Tonight I made chicken with peppers and onions, those being my go-to veggies at the moment as they're cheap and go with pretty much everything. I bought a large thing of chicken for only $5 that I'll freeze and several peppers and onions probably cost me no more than $3. (Sure, I had Kraft Mac n Cheese for lunch, but I'm still a kid at heart!)
Someday I want to have a large collection of herbs and spices, but for now I season everything with lemon juice, garlic, and italian seasoning. Besides chicken, those ingredients also work great on pasta, potatoes, and salads. Another necessity? Franks original hot sauce for wings. My addiction. I'm planning to make salad wraps with buffalo chicken and peppers and onions. I add it to my eggs in the morning for a little kick. It's no longer just for wings.
I obviously don't want to eat like this forever since I love food so I'm searching for a second job (well, third counting my internship). I finished training at Victoria's Secret and will be working 21 hours next week with my internship, so a total of about 45 hours, but I know that's not enough to eat, let alone pay bills. That's where Craigslist becomes my lifesaver yet again. I interviewed at a tiki dive bar in Greenwich village that I hope I get. But that means I'll be working till 4 am, getting no sleep, and working around 60-70 hours a week (that's including my internship).
At that point I may be cranky, hyped up on caffeine all the time, and easily irritated, but I'll be able to treat myself once in awhile (I'm thinking shoes) for working so hard and pay off my student loans. I just keep telling myself that it won't be forever.
