Don't sweat the small stuff
After several rescheduled appointments and annoying phone calls later, I finally have internet! Since I'm too broke to actually go anywhere, I can now enjoy any free time I have by watching Netflix and drooling over food I wish I could make on Pinterest. My roommates and I spent Saturday night huddled around a laptop on pillows in the bare living room watching Night at the Roxbury on Netflix, which surprisingly I had never seen. I have been living off of sandwiches and cereal (we still don't have a microwave). I can't wait till I can treat myself to a fat, juicy steak.
The Gotham thrift store down the street has proved a godsend. They get new shipments every week so I'm planning to go every Friday. This past Friday I found a large dresser in good condition for $30! They deliver for free which I love even more. I also scored a vintage tin lunchbox with the "We Can Do It!" propaganda poster that I plan to bring to work everyday. I don't think you'll find a more enthusiastic thrifter than me, bargain hunting is one of my specialties, but I could write a whole other blog on that. My roommate found a table and chairs from the same thrift store for the kitchen so I no longer have to stand half-asleep in the kitchen as I eat my cereal.
Our toilet clogs up and overflows easily and our plunger from the 99 cent store is a piece of crap. The UPS guy now knows me and we have small conversations whenever he comes. I've found that people have serious staring problems and I was proposed to from a guy driving by me. I saw a drunk guy puke on the train and I was so grateful it wasn't me. I went to a wine bar where the food menu was ridiculous: a bowl of almonds was $5. And I got rejected at a club even though I was on the list. Welcome to NYC nightlife. At least I got a great workout in high heels.
But all these little problems don't matter because I am living the dream. Last Tuesday I went to my first fashion show during New York Fashion Week. It was the Osklen show at Lincoln Center. I was in the fourth row and actor Edward Norton was sitting in front of me in the first row. Everyone around me wore the most stylish outfits and I was so inspired. Later that night I went backstage at the Betsey Johnson runway show to meet the makeup artist and find out what kind of look they were going for.
Johnson, who graduated from SU, was also celebrating her 70th birthday so it was a huge party and extremely chaotic. She had an 80s prom theme with black and pink confetti everywhere and the models had a pin-up, superhero look with glittery red lips. I may have been sleep deprived and pushed and shoved, but I was so happy to be there. You can read my post about it here. If you click on my name you'll see everything else I've written as well. Now I know it isn't hard-hitting journalism, but the posts are fun and at least I'm getting published!
