Bumps and bruises, but no broken bones

It's been quite the week. I currently don't have internet so I haven't been able to write a post till now, as I'm sitting in a local coffee shop sipping on a coffee and enjoying the free wifi. I have bruises up and down my legs, my bank account looks a little depressing, and I'm ready to throw rocks at the subway (if it ever comes).

After a bit of a hiccup my roommates and I signed the lease to our new apartment on Tuesday morning. The lesson that I learned is to discuss everything regarding splitting rent and utilities (especially with a couple sharing a room) before looking at apartments and especially before making a meeting to sign a lease.

Tuesday morning I made my way to Williamsburg to meet our broker agent and landlord before heading to my internship. But for some reason my stomach wasn't agreeing with me and I felt really ill. I forced myself on the packed subway where I had to stand and began to get a cold sweat and felt like I was going to faint and vomit all over the woman in front of me. I was on an express train which skips several stops and I felt helpless. I began gagging and coughing, hiding behind my blazer when the woman in front of me asked if I was okay. As soon as the train stopped I hopped off one station early so I could vomit all over the floor. No one seemed to notice, they walked right over it and passed me as if it's normal to puke in a subway station. I was still really ill heading to my lease signing so after getting my keys (I was jumping up and down inside but felt like death on the outside) I went back to my friend's apartment to sleep all day.

That night I helped my friend, who had recently broken her foot, get to the hospital on crutches through the subway so she could pick up her x-rays. It is impossible to get anywhere in this city being handicapped and let me tell you, I'm so glad I only vomited in the subway instead of falling down the stairs like my friend. You have to look on the bright side.

Thursday was Fashion's Night Out, the biggest shopping night of the year where shops stay open later, designers, models, and editors get together, limited edition products are sold, and you can hear all the heels hitting the pavement as the most stylish girls go searching for the free makeovers and cocktails. I was on a RSVP list at Sephora to celebrate Marchesa's premiere fragrance and to cover it for my internship. I decided to move some of my stuff earlier in the day to my apartment, which I hadn't even seen yet.

If you know me well then you know I have a lot of stuff. And shoes. I had to take a suitcase I can't lift through the subway, taking three different trains over an hour commute to Glendale. I don't need a gym, I feel jacked just from doing this. Going up and down stairs, banging it against my leg, sitting it on my toes, getting random men to help me, I finally made it. The apartment is really nice for what we paid. It's spacious with hardwood floors. But very empty. I went to Target to buy an air mattress to sleep on. If you look where Target is, it's like five miles from my apartment, but the subway to it takes over an hour. After standing in a nearly empty aisle of air mattresses I chose one that was well over my budget and carried that thing once again through the subway so I could get ready for my night.

I had half an hour to shower and throw myself together. I ran to the subway stop with dripping wet hair. I thought, at least the wet and messy hair look is in right now. I had little time to research as I wanted to be prepared in case I could get an interview at Sephora.

Fifth Avenue looked like heaven. I could hear music blasting from several shops, there were so many fashionistas out, and it was a very glamorous night. After being stressed all day it was a good reminder of why I came here and that I am meant to do this. I walked right in to Sephora, passing the lines, to chat with the girl who does PR for Sephora. Some of Marchesa's gowns were on display on the balconies above, worn by celebrities on the red carpet. I was led up a spiral staircase with other editors to the balcony so we could interview Keren Craig, one of the designers behind Marchesa. We were served cocktails and we chatted about what media company we were from. Keren came, we stood around her asking questions about her perfume, and took pictures with her. I felt like I was in heaven. Though all the girls around me looked so put together and I felt like a hot mess with damp hair. But I know that won't last forever.

After I left I had to write an article about my experience and interview to post the next morning so I headed to my friend's place to use their internet. Then decided to take one more suitcase with me back to my apartment. I live off the M train, a line that does not run during most of Manhattan and Brooklyn after midnight. Instead, it acts as a shuttle between a few stops in Queens by my place. I was hoping to catch the last train before midnight but luck proved to not be on my side that night. After waiting more than half an hour I had to find another way home. I decided to take the 6 train to the L train to get to where the M runs. Well the L is known to be a hot mess. It was under construction after one of the stops so there were free shuttle buses instead. Me and my suitcase lugged our way up the stairs yet again to stand in a mob of people waiting for these shuttles. It was almost 2 am. My arms were so sore. I was so tired. I made it home in three hours. Then slept on a firm air mattress with no blankets or pillows.

On Friday I planned to go get my last suitcase. Which is actually a giant duffle with no wheels. So I emptied out my large suitcase so I can transfer everything over. There was a smoke situation at one of the subway stations and the M train wasn't running into Manhattan. Other lines had delays. I turned around and said forget that. Instead I explored the neighborhood and found a thrift store where I bought plates for 50 cents. I will definitely go back for more.

I won't have internet till next weekend, so till then I'll be lounging on my air mattress watching movies that I have on my hard drive. I still have one more suitcase to transport....
