20 things you miss after moving away from Portland

1. Driving. Not down Division or stuck in traffic on I-84 but on the windy roads of the historic Columbia River highway.

2. Saturday Market. Other cities have similar weekend events but Smorgasborg in NYC doesn't even come close to the elephant ears, handmade jewelry, and henna tattoos. Where else are you going to eat your fries in a crowd of tattoed hipsters with dreadlocks?

3. You long for the giant hot cakes and drunken people watching at Hot Cake House at 4 am. Oh and the cheap prices.

4. Concerts aren't quite like the ones at Crystal Ballroom where you're bouncing with the drunk audience.

5. When something costs $20, you actually pay $20 and not a penny more because there's no sales tax.

6. Floating the Clackamas River with everyone and their packs of beer and blunts. When Portland hits 90+ this is the only thing Portlanders get right because movie theaters are too expensive.

7. Cheap drinks. $2 well drinks before the clubs? My wallet misses those nights.

8. You and all of your friends can eat different cuisines together because of the delicious food carts happily packed into pods. Not to mention the unique dishes.

9. It does get harder to breathe when you leave Oregon. What does fresh air smell like again? All I smell is piss and garbage.

10. No one quite understands my obsession with Tillamook cheese until I bring back a brick for them to try. Extra sharp white cheddar, please get into my belly.

11. You realize how spoiled you were eating fresh Chinook salmon when the only thing available everywhere else is farm-raised color-added salmon. Also, the Salmon River.

12. You'd rather get lost in Powell's City of Books than in an unfamiliar city.

13. Your ears miss the sound of live local music. Pink Martini, The Decemberists, Blitzen Trapper, The Shins. They make up your summer indie playlist.

14. Blazers. Or more like Blazer fans. There's something so loyal about them — their tears of joy when they win and their sad puppy faces when they lose.

15. People obsess over Salt & Straw but I have to admit, I've never had it. For me, it's a soft serve ice cream cone at Multnomah Falls. Even on cold days.

16. You wish you would get stuck in the PDX airport...but that will never happen. Small, clean, free Wi-Fi, local breweries and delicious food? Yeah, it beats out all other airports.

17. Ringside has the best happy hour on the planet. I could eat 10 orders of their steak bites.

18. You realize how grateful you were for gas attendants and still fear the thought of pumping your own gas.

19. You could be a city girl one day, a beach chick the next, and a snowboarder the day after.

20. The Portland sign. It might as well say "Welcome Home."
